 ABOUT HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES RESEARCH PROGRAMME (HSSRP SECONDARY)

OVERVIEW

OBJECTIVE

The programme aims to provide Secondary/ Year 3 and 4 SBGE/IP pupils with an interest in Humanities and Social Sciences an opportunity to carry out research under the guidance of experts in the field from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore; the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University; the Humanities and Social Sciences Education Academic Group, National Institute of Education; and School of Social Sciences, Singapore Management University.

PROGRAMME

This programme comprises of four components.

  • Mentorship Attachment : This is the period when participants work with their mentors on projects proposed by the mentors. Mentors and participants will meet for discussions for a minimum of 3 contact hours (excluding correspondences and editing of reports).
  • Publication of Project Papers : This offers a platform for the participants to share their research findings. At the end of the mentorship period, participants will submit their papers to their teacher-supervisors and mentors for vetting and approval for publication.
  • Project Review : All participants will be given the opportunity to present their papers to a review panel. The panel will shortlist projects to be presented at the main session of the Symposium.
  • Symposium : This symposium will offer all participants the opportunity to communicate their research findings to others.

SELECTION

The programme is open to Secondary/Year 3 and 4 SBGE/IP pupils. Interested pupils are required to submit an application form and a research proposal to indicate their interest in participating in the programme.

The pupil should be committed to the HSSRP and have 1 weekday afternoon free to meet up with the mentor and/or to work on the research project.

The maximum number of pupils involved in a group project is 3.

The teachers will also provide input as to the suitability of the pupil for the programme.
Pupils will be selected based on their research proposal, Individualised Research Study (IRS) or Individualised Study Options (ISO) project, grades and feedback/recommendations from their teachers.

Pupils are also required to complete the Undertaking Form.

The pupil should ensure that he/she is committed to HSSRP by setting aside adequate time to meet up with the mentor and to work on the research project. The pupil should not sign up for a concurrent mentorship or any other programmes that are likely to lead to clashes in schedules and commitment.

The pupil needs to declare in advance any other mentorship or programmes that he/she is also applying for at the same time.

If a pupil has been selected for HSSRP and subsequently decides to withdraw, the pupil will not be able to participate in the programme the following year unless there is a valid reason provided at the time of the withdrawal.
